179: Glenn Livingston, PhD: Never Binge Again

February 10, 2020

This BOOK, Never Binge Again, has changed the way I view binge eating... ONCE AND FOR ALL.

You can get this book, Never Binge Again, for FREE at www.YouCanStopOvereating.com

I could breathe a sigh of relief after I finished "Never Binge Again." I am glad that I saw the book all the way through and approached it with an open mind, because it has SAVED me so much heartache, wasted binges and self-hatred.

I am so excited to not only have Glenn on the podcast, BUT also provide you a FREE COPY of his book and more info on his amazing coaching.

Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's)  previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or any of the other major media outlets you see on this page.  You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV.

Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants.  Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food.

177: Mike Matthews: Thinner (or Bigger), Leaner, Stronger

177: Mike Matthews: Thinner (or Bigger), Leaner, Stronger

February 2, 2020

Mike Matthews believes that EVERYONE can have the body they want.  We could have talked FOREVER on all the things, but I know that I fell IN LOVE with the TRUTH in his book: Thinner, Leaner, Stronger this past summer. My guy friends love his book, Bigger Leaner Stronger, BTW.

He writes, "My mission is to give everyone that opportunity by providing time-proven, evidence-based advice on how to build muscle, lose fat, and get and stay healthy.

I’ve been training for more than a decade now. In that time, I’ve read thousands of pages of scientific literature and tried just about every type of workout program, diet regimen, and supplement you can imagine. At this point, I can confidently say that while I don’t know everything, I know what works and what doesn’t.

Like most people who get into weightlifting, I had no clue what I was doing when I started out. I turned to fitness magazines for help, which told me to spend a couple of hours in the gym every day and hundreds of dollars on pills and powders every month. This went on for years, and I jumped from diet to diet, workout program to workout program, and supplement to supplement, only to make mediocre progress and eventually get stuck in a rut.

I then turned to personal trainers for guidance, but they had me do more of the same. After spending many thousands of dollars with them, I still hadn’t gained any more muscle or strength to speak of, and I still had no idea what to do with my diet and training to reach my goals. I liked working out too much to quit, but I wasn’t happy with my body and didn’t know what I was doing wrong.

I didn’t look bad by any means, but that’s not exactly what you’d expect from 1500-plus hours of working out with no extended breaks.

I finally decided that something had to change, and I knew that I needed to start with learning the actual physiology of muscle growth and fat loss. So I threw the magazines away, fired the trainers, got off the internet forums, and searched out the work of top strength and bodybuilding coaches, talked to scores of natural bodybuilders, and started reading scientific papers.

Several months later, a clear picture was beginning to emerge.

The real science of getting into incredible shape is very simple—much simpler than the fitness industry wants us to believe. It flies in the face of a lot of the stuff we see on TV, Instagram, and YouTube and read in books, articles, and magazines.

For example:

  • You don’t need supplements to build a great physique.
  • You don’t need to constantly change up your workout routine to “confuse” your muscles.
  • You don’t need to “eat clean” to get and stay lean.
  • You don’t need to stop eating carbs and sugars to lose weight.
  • You don’t need to eat small meals every few hours to “boost your metabolism.”
  • You don’t need to grind out hours and hours of boring cardio every week to get a ripped core.

You don’t need to be in the gym hours per day and sacrifice your relationships with your friends and loved ones.

As a result of what I had learned, I completely changed my approach to eating and exercising, and my body responded in ways I couldn’t believe. My strength skyrocketed. My muscles started growing again. My energy levels went through the roof. And here’s the kicker: I was spending less time in the gym, doing less cardio, and eating foods I actually liked."

166: Kevin Curry: Fit Men Cook

166: Kevin Curry: Fit Men Cook

December 12, 2019

The amazing Kevin Curry of "Fit Men Cook."  He says:

"I think we’ve all been there. My “ah-ha” moment happened when I saw a photo of myself on my friend’s Facebook page.  My initial reaction was a mixture of denial, surprise and quite truthfully, a little shame for letting myself go as much as I had.  I was overweight and felt sluggish, and to compound the issue, my physician told me my blood pressure was steadily rising. So, I did what most people try to do— I started exercising to try to “out train” a poor diet.

"I was wrong.  There was not enough cardio or weights in the world that could get this fat off my back. I realized that if I was going to accomplish my fitness goals, it would have to be through a steady, healthy diet, complemented by hard work in the gym.

"So, I went to a half price book store, bought every single book about dieting and started studying nutrition.  Shortly after, I got started cooking.  I did not have much money so I started experimenting in the kitchen with different proteins and veggies in order to make simple, relatively inexpensive items, taste great.  I vowed that I would never eat another boiled chicken breast again unless I had to!

"Fitness is a lifelong journey and I could not imagine a life of eating boring, bland food just to be healthy.  Now more than ever, I firmly believe that healthier food options do not have to be boring. Ever. In fact, they are pretty tasty.  And even better, the lifestyle changed worked. As I saw my physique begin to change, I was motivated to push harder and set more aggressive goals.  Not only did I learn how to lose weight, but also I learned how to gain muscle, with small tweaks in both my diet and training."

October 30, 2019

Meredith Atwood (@SwimBikeMom) and her co-host, ten-year old Stella (@Wods4Kids), interview CrossFit Games podium athlete and all-around nice guy, Patrick Vellner.

Vellner says, "[As a] part time chiropractor in Nanaimo, Canada, I have an extensive sports background and have been competing in Crossfit since 2013. I made it to the games for the first time in 2015 on Team Crossfit Plateau 2 and have since been back in 2016-2019 to compete as an individual finishing on the podium 3 times. Crossfit has been a great way for me to challenge myself and escape from my studies while also being a great outlet for my competitiveness."

126: Dani Grabol: Fear No Distance (Returns to the Podcast)

126: Dani Grabol: Fear No Distance (Returns to the Podcast)

August 6, 2019

This Episode is dedicated to the memory of Bethany Rutledge.

A return to the podcast with the EPIC Dani Grabol.

A long and hard race. The EPIC Danielle "Dani" Grabol is mind-boggling... in a good way. After developing "terrible eating habits" in her teen years and into her twenties, she had a rude health awakening. Losing her breath while walking up a small flight of stairs, Danielle realized that her health was on a downward spiral and it was time to make a serious lifestyle change.

She then lost 70 pounds, became an ultra athlete, and not only that---she literally proved that she feared NO distance: she was the FIRST woman to complete Epic 5 (5 iron distance triathlons in 5 Days on 5 islands of Hawaii). She has shattered the stereotypes of females in ultra sports with this feat---not to mention she is also a double iron distance finisher (281.2-mile Double Anvil Triathlon), and the Race Across America (RAMM) (a bicycle race from coast to coast) 2-Person Female Record Holder.

In her new book, Fear No Distance, Danielle opens up about overcoming injuries, and discovering the world of ultra bike racing and long distance cycling.  Her story is one of incredible grit and determination.
